The morning commute can be the most daunting and awful part of a work day. Traffic frequently frustrates drivers leaving them in awful mood right before they start working. This irritation leaves a lasting negative energy throughout the rest of the day.

The average American spends 38 hours a year in traffic during their morning commute and in big cities, it can be up to 60 hours a year. Why not take control of your time and use it for something beneficial?

Preparation is the key to remain calm during your morning routine. Before you go to sleep, lay out your outfit for the next day. This will give you a little extra time to sleep in while giving you the ease of not thinking of clothing choices.

Sitting in traffic while hungry is one of the worst feelings. The food you eat fuels your body. Breakfast sets the tone for the rest of your day. In the morning, eat something loaded with protein to maintain focus and energy. A simple breakfast to wake you up is Yogurt with Flaxseed and Walnuts. You can top this with berries for added sweetness and antioxidants.

In a typical office environment, you sit for the majority of the day. You are also sitting in your car for the long commute. Before you get into your car, stretch out your lower back, neck and legs so you are limber and loose for the drive. Certain yoga poses like Cat-Cow pose can help with this.

Often, traffic feels like a waste of time. However, your perspective changes if you start seeing the time spent sitting bumper to bumper as positive thing. Practice self-reflection, it can be much more enjoyable and a more useful way to pass the time. Use meditation applications like Headspace or Buddhify to be more mindful behind the wheel.

Just Chill also happens to be a lifesaver. Take one on the road with you after having your morning cup of coffee. Not only will it help calm those caffeine jitters, but you’ll look like a smooth operator strolling into the office.

Certain smells trigger different emotions. While driving, it is important to stay calm, but not sleepy. Oils like peppermint or citrus can keep you both alert and calm during your drive to work. Bring along air fresheners or oils to keep handy for every drive.

Traffic during the morning commute is almost always unavoidable. Once you accept this fact you learn to change your perspective on the time spent in the car. Make your commute a time to enjoy where you are, stay calm and just chill.
